Tessellation

This blog post is about my piece of art from the tessellation unit. If the text is green it will be part of the green expectations. If it is blue, the blue expectations and if the text is white the part was done as part of the black expectations. Red text means it is part of all 3 levels.

Physical Response-
By doing this project I learned the skill of creating complex patterns using simple lines and a simple process. I also enhanced the skill of creating patterns without hesitation. This are important skills to have because it makes it easier to create designs like this.
Emotional Response-
My emotions while doing this project were mainly a form of focus or stress. Stress because
I was afraid I would not finish and fall behind. Focus because when I was not stressed I was
blocking out all outer sounds with my iPod and trying to get the work done.A piece of music that I think describes the emotions and my artwork is in the link below. I think this music describes my art because it is very complex and it took a lot of time and work. The song is a mash- up of 25 songs and is called Blame it on the Pop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNzrwh2Z2hQ
A problem I had to overcome was that my pattern is very complex. With a complex pattern like this it was very hard to get the required number of paper squares finished. When I had finished I had the minimum amount of paper squares and mine were in black and white. I didn't have time to color them. You could also encounter this problem on almost anything. One example would be a school project, where something just takes to much time. You did everything write but you just can't get it done in the time given.
Doing this project increased our powers of observation because you always had to pay attention to your tessellation. You had to scour it over and over again to see things like if your paper was lined up with the paper under it or if the designs were exactly the same. This was especially with my project because I had so many small details to keep track of.
The elements we used in my piece of art were Lines, Shapes and Texture. I would have Color but I did not have time to color. These are some elements that can be found in most pieces of art.
I am not very satisfied with my project. Although I understand that I chose a very detailed and complex pattern, If I had to do it again I would change my pattern to something quicker, simpler and easier. This way I would be able to create more paper squares and I would have time to color my pattern.

Self Assessment and Reflection-
What we learned while doing this project are the same skills we enhanced while doing this.
learned how to create a continuous pattern without a break and how to create detailed patterns
in a simple way. Doing this project we also learned a little about MC Escher.
An artist who completed a piece of work much like mine was MC Escher. The link is a short video I made of MC Escher's work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOdTqo8XuT8
A profession where the skills we learned would be helpful would be a designer. A designer would be able to create detailed designs on objects using only simple lines . The second skill would also be helpful because the design would come together and would be finished faster.

Creature Creations

I created a creature in Design Art named E.S.S. Standing for Elemental Snow Snake. The creature has burning wings but the flames go out when she is unconscious or sleeping. She live up in the mountains. We are supposed to create a story along with the creature so here is mine.

Deep in the dreaded Himalayas a serpent, fake the mere mortal human race, curled onto a pile of snow within an ice cavern. Lazily the E.S.S. fell asleep and didn't move as much as a leave on a slight breeze. The snores could be heard from miles down at a Tibetan farmer's farm. He feared the creature's hunting skills. Many times he smelled burning wool coming from the yak field and would find corpses of singed yak lain out delicately. Back up in the ice cave of the sleeping Snow Snake an icicle hung over the perfectly limp body wrapped in her own blazing wings. Suddenly the sharpened tip plunged down on the creature.

***
Blood leaked onto the ice rink as she rubbed the blood sodden wing onto the snow imprinted with her sleeping shape. The flame on her wing immediately melted the snow. The wound was turning purple because of the freeze though her wings were on fire she never felt it. Like her snores the tears were heard at the farm. Even though the E.S.S. had slaughtered many members of his herd before, he could not bare to hear a living being be so miserable. Up in the lair of the E.S.S. She was getting terribly hungry and did not know better. She launched her body of the edge of the mountain and for a moment glided before causing an avalanche down the mountain side.

***
The E.S.S. whimpered her way to the farm and collapsed meters away from a plump juicy yak. The farmer found the body with the flame less wings. Approaching with much caution he found the serpent and could not stop himself from feeling sorry for the creature. Rushing into the small hut he called home the farmer tore through cabinets and looked everywhere for bandages and ointments to aid the E.S.S. After about 20 minutes he had successfully bandage the E.S.S.'s wounded wing. To the farmers surprise the snow snake immediately recognized what the farmer had done for her and bowed her head respectfully.

What happened after?: The E.S.S. spent the rest of her life as a friend and aid to the farmer. Because the farmer had no family she made great company. The snow snake earned her keep by fetching water when needed and many other ways. The farmer shared what was his with the creature.

Positive and Negative

Recently our class did a piece called positive and negative. On a big piece of paper we put down another piece of paper with a color of our choice. On that piece of paper we drew out shapes and stuck them on the flipped on the base paper. In the end it looked like shadows. In this project our goal was to try and confuse the viewer so they would not know if it was a white paper on black paper or a black paper on white paper. To make the art we had to cut out shapes from the black piece of paper then we glued it the oposite way on the white paper. For shapes that weren't attached to the edge of the paper we used a knife to slice it out.
